Alan was annoying as usual this morning. He wouldn’t stop going on about the upcoming testing periods. I did my best to nod along even though my kids are still too young to be involved in the testing.

My thoughts were still on the amazing kiss my new husband just gave me which made it twice as annoying when Alan kept touching my hand.

He accidentally brushed my chest after that. I don’t know how many ways I can tell the man no. I’ve tried rejecting him outright and that isn’t working. I’ve tried subtle approaches like pulling away when he touches me. But nothing is getting through to the man. He can’t be that dense, and I’m not about to give him the satisfaction of knowing how uncomfortable he makes me.

For a moment, I consider telling Bear about the problem. Something tells me he’d have it handled in under five minutes. But I’m not about to drag him into this mess. I’m a grown woman who can fight her own battles, even if the battle involves a sleazy boss.

There’s a knock on my door, interrupting my thoughts. Monica pokes her head into my classroom. All of my students have left for the day. “How is Mrs. Scott?”

I glance at my wedding ring. I can’t stop smiling when I see it. I love the gold band that Bear chose for me. He’s been on my mind all day, and I can’t wait to get home to him. “I really like him. He’s sweet and kind and generous.”

“So, then what’s wrong?” She asks, searching my face. She knows me so well that it’s hard to hide anything from this woman who has been my mentor.

“I can’t help being worried. What if he’s not the one for me?” My feelings for Bear are strong, so strong that it scares me. As a foster kid, I learned quickly not to form close bonds with the people around me. It only leads to more heartache and loneliness. But with Bear, it’s like he’s broken down all of those defenses in less than a day.

Monica shakes her head. “The other guy doesn’t have the courage to show his face while Bear does. Bear is real. This other guy is nothing more than a coward who won’t step forward. You deserve better. You deserve a guy that’s willing to show up for you every single day. A man who is proud to have you on his arm.”

I think of the masculine pride that was on Bear’s face as we stepped from the gazebo to the announcement we were man and wife. He practically beamed at the knowledge, as if he had the most beautiful woman in the world on his arm.

She’s right, and I can’t believe I didn’t see this sooner. Still, one doubt lingers in my mind. “I know it sounds crazy, but am I betraying my hero from that night by moving on with Bear?”

Her expression softens. “Your hero chose to be there with you for one night.
